Malawi introduce the VigiMobile AEFI reporting tool
Malawi has become the sixth country to introduce the VigiMobile Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) reporting tool. Over the past years, Malawi has made tremendous strides in improving its vaccine safety surveillance system. This has been shown in its ability to meet the minimum requirement of reporting 1 serious AEFI per million population and the ability to report over 1600 AEFI between January and November 2024. This remarkable great improvement in reporting resulted from the training and mentorship of health workers on AEFI surveillance and reporting, notably country reported 198 cases in 2023.
The launch of the VigiMobile reporting tool, started with a training of trainers at the national level, facilitated by WHO HQ, AFRO, and the Uppsala monitoring center (UMC) from 9-11 December 2024. This training was followed by zonal training, where EPI coordinators and Pharmacovigilance coordinators from 28 districts were trained as trainers to train health workers in their respective districts in January 2025. The use of the VigiMobile reporting tool will ensure a smooth flow of AEFI reports from the district level to the national Vigiflow database. This will also enable Malawi to positively contribute to the number of reports in the global database, the VigiBase.
