Integrating health into diplomacy to ensure the well-being of the population
On October 18, the World Health Organization (WHO) had the honor of receiving a group of 20 students from the Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy, in an effort to strengthen Angola's presence at the United Nations and increase the visibility of the United Nations' actions in Angola. This visit is part of an initiative by the Diplomatic Academy to connect students with representatives of international organizations accredited in Angola and provide a deeper understanding of multilateralism. The main aim of the meeting was to promote understanding of the fundamental role of global health and the WHO in the context of diplomatic relations.
During the visit, the students had the opportunity to explore the role, functions, and responsibilities of the WHO, which is dedicated to promoting, protecting and providing health, with special attention to the Angolan context. In a session led by Victor Luteganya, Universal Health Coverage Officer, a comprehensive overview of current initiatives and programs was presented, addressing the main public health challenges faced in the country and the strategies implemented by the WHO to support the Ministry of Health in overcoming them.
The meeting emphasized that the integration of health into diplomatic practices is vital to deal effectively with public health crises and guarantee the well-being of populations. In this regard, the WHO and the Diplomatic Academy have strengthened their relations with key activities, and there is a strong commitment to making global health an important pillar in diplomatic training in Angola. The students also reflected on how health matters can influence diplomatic discourse and policy-making.
In addition to the presentations, the visit provided a space for interactive discussions, allowing students to ask questions and exchange ideas about the role of health in international relations.
This initiative represents a significant contribution to the training of diplomats who not only recognize the relevance of global health, but who are also prepared to act for a healthier and more sustainable future for all. The WHO reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with educational institutions to train a new generation of leaders who understand the interconnection between health and diplomacy. The WHO thanks the Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy for its partnership and its commitment to training the diplomats of the future.
