WHO scales up Lassa fever response in affected states

Abuja, 1 February 2019 - The World Health Organization (WHO) is scaling up response to the Lassa fever outbreaks in states across Nigeria to strengthen rapid containment of the disease.  WHO is mobilizing experts to intervene in investigations, contact-tracing, risk communication and plans are underway to strengthen efforts to further assist Nigeria in controlling the Lassa fever outbreak. 

On 21 January 2019, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) declared an outbreak of Lassa fever following an increase in the number of cases.

Abuja, 25 January 2019 –  In an historic event held at the Presidential Villa, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Muhammad Buhari launched the World Health Organization (WHO) revised third generation Nigeria Country Cooperation Strategy (CCSIII). 

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma who represented President Buhari expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health, all Nigerian health workers and development partners especially the WHO for their efforts in advancing healthcare delivery in Nigeria. 

WHO hands over incinerator for injection waste disposal to Bauchi State

Bauchi, 20 December 2018 - The World Health Organization (WHO) has been commended for the donation, installation and hand over of an incinerator – INCiNER-8- to the Bauchi State Ministry of Health. The Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary HealthCare Development Agency (EC-BSPHCDA) Mr Ibrahim Gamawa, who received the incinerator on behalf of the Bauchi State Ministry of Health, described WHO as an indispensable partner in the health sector development in the state. 

Nigeria launches Yellow fever vaccination campaign to stop outbreak in Edo state 

The Government of Nigeria with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), and partners launched this week a Yellow fever reactive vaccination campaign , funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The campaign will be implemented in 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo state where cases have been confirmed. The immunization drive is a response to the unprecedented yellow fever outbreak recently identified in the State.

Government and partners rally against adolescent pregnancy and unsafe abortions

Abuja, 14 December, 2018 - The Federal Government in collaboration with key partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) recently resolved to redouble efforts to tackle the menace of unsafe abortions and adolescent pregnancies. Teenage pregnancies particularly in secondary and tertiary institutions are on the rise, leading many of the affected to commit unsafe abortions – as abortion is illegal in Nigeria. 

Tackling cholera outbreaks in North-east humanitarian emergencies

Borno reaches over 850 000 children with Seasonal Malaria Chemotherapy

Maiduguri, 12 November 2018 - With more than 2 700 volunteers spread across seven local government areas of Borno state, the 4th cycle of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaign is underway. World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting the State Ministry of Health to reach more than 850 000 children with anti-malaria drugs in the concluding cycle of the campaign for 2018. 

The campaign aims to reduce the burden of malaria especially among children 3-59 months who have been predisposed to mosquito bites in the crisis-torn Borno state.
