State House, Freetown, Sierra Leone – March 7, 2025 – President Julius Maada Bio received a delegation led by the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, comprising representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Chief Medical Officer, and the Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency to announce and discuss implementation of activities of the $20 million from the Pandemic Fund.

This funding, awarded through a highly competitive global process, will enhance Sierra Leone's capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics. The allocation will be strategically invested in strengthening disease surveillance, expanding laboratory capabilities, and developing a skilled health workforce, ultimately fortifying the nation's health security infrastructure.

Dr. Demby emphasized the collaborative spirit and strong partnerships with WHO and FAO that were crucial in crafting a compelling proposal. "The Pandemic Fund award ensures that Sierra Leone is not only responding to outbreaks but is continuously prepared to prevent and contain them," he stated, highlighting the shift towards proactive health security.

WHO Country Representative, Dr. George Ameh, commended President Bio's dedication to universal health coverage, noting that the successful funding bid reflects this commitment. "The leadership and dedication of President Bio and the Ministry of Health, along with the collaborative efforts of all partners, were instrumental in securing this funding," he said.

FAO Country Representative, Dr. Saeed Abubakar Bancie, outlined the fund’s focus areas and pledged FAO’s technical expertise in strengthening animal health, vital for preventing zoonotic diseases. He acknowledged the government's support for the health sector.

President Bio congratulated the delegation, emphasizing the power of effective partnerships. "This achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished when we work together with determination and purpose," he said. He reiterated his government's commitment to universal health coverage and urged continued efforts to translate the funding into tangible improvements in Sierra Leone's healthcare system.
