WHO donates vehicles to strengthen healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone
On August 12, 2024, Freetown, Sierra Leone- The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated seven cars to the Ministry of Health, Sierra Leone, to strengthen the country’s healthcare delivery system, including the implementation of the Person-Centered Life Stages Approach to healthcare with a focus on the districts.
The vehicles that were handed over to the Minister of Health, Dr Demby Austine, in the presence of Deputy Minister II, Dr Jalikatu Mustapha, other Ministry of Health Officials, and WHO staff at the WHO Country Office are expected to significantly enhance the Ministry’s ability to oversee and more effectively support healthcare facilities across the country, particularly in the remote and hard to reach areas where monitoring and supervision remain a challenge.
“These vehicles will enable the Ministry of Health to promptly reach communities, ensuring that healthcare services are provided where they are most needed. For instance, they will facilitate the transportation of medical personnel and supplies to remote areas and monitor healthcare facilities in these districts,” said Dr Nuwagira
“This donation highlights WHO’s ongoing commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s health system in achieving its objectives by equipping the Ministry with vital resources to enhance its healthcare service delivery capabilities,” added Dr Nuwagira.
Receiving the vehicles, the Minister of Health, Dr Demby Austin, expressed his appreciation for WHO’s sustained support, noting, “These vehicles will significantly improve the ability of the Ministry of Health to supervise district-level health services. WHO has greatly supported our progress in providing quality healthcare, and the Ministry is thankful for the resources that have helped us realize our vision.”
“This donation demonstrates the strong partnership between our organizations and the shared commitment to improving health outcomes for all,” added Dr Demby.
The Ministry of Health is prioritizing improving healthcare services nationwide, focusing on the Person-Centered Life Stages Approach that ensures a continuum of care tailored to the various stages of life, from birth to old age. And will work with WHO and other partners to assess the impact of this initiative and explore further opportunities to enhance healthcare delivery throughout the country.”
This initiative aligns with WHO’s mission to ensure universal access to quality health services, especially at sub-national levels. The WHO Country Office in Sierra Leone aims to support resilient and sustainable health systems by empowering health authorities with essential tools and resources and ensuring access, quality, and equity in health services delivery.
