National Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Launched in Zambia

24th January 2008, Lusaka -- The Ministry of Health in collaboration with other partners in maternal and child health launched the National Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health at a ceremony which was held at Chilenje urban clinic on Wednesday, 23rd January, 2008. The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Brian Chituwo officially launched the partnership. In his launch statement, Dr. Chituwo stated that the partnership has been formed to harmonise resources and galvanise interventions aimed at improving the health and survival of mothers, newborns and children.

Pentavalent vaccine launched in Lesotho for the first time

Maseru, 12 December 2008 -- In yet another milestone effort to reduce childhood sicknesses and deaths from preventable diseases, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW), Dr. Mphu Ramatlapeng, officially launched the Pentavalent vaccine, for the first time in the history of Lesotho.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the MOHSW, WHO, UNICEF, the GAVI Alliance and other partners, this life-saving vaccine was introduced to provide more protection to children in the country.

Lusaka, 4 July 2009 -- Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, the President of the Nippon Foundation/Sasakawa Health Memorial Foundation (NF/SHMF) and WHO Goodwill Ambassador for the Elimination of Leprosy visited Zambia from 29th June to 4th July 2009 to follow-up on the country’s Leprosy elimination achievements. He was met by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda at State House on 2nd July 2009. Mr. Sasakawa’s message to the President was that of making the country free from Leprosy by ensuring that it is put high on the health agenda.

This meeting has brought together more than forty participants from the participating countries which include Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
