Regional Mpox Bulletin: 18 November 2024

Since 1 January 2022, cases of mpox have been reported to WHO from 21 Member States across the WHO African Region. As of 17 November 2024, a total of 15,148 laboratory confirmed cases, including 76 deaths, have been reported to WHO. In 2024, as of 17 November 2024, 19 countries have reported 13,293 confirmed cases, including 54 deaths. The three countries with most of the cases in 2024 are Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), (n = 10,309), Burundi, (n = 2 003), and Uganda, (n = 521).

In the past 6 weeks (7 October to 17 November2024), the AFRO region reported 2,866 cases with 9 deaths (CFR = 0.31%) compared to 2,407 cases with 11 deaths (CFR= 0.46%) reported in the previous six weeks (26 August to 6 October 2024).

A significant number of suspected cases, that are clinically compatible with mpox are not tested due to limited diagnostic capacity and they never get confirmed. For this reason, suspected cases are also shown in this section. Care should be taken when interpreting these cases, as they are collected according to different case definitions. In some countries, suspected cases that are negative after laboratory test are not removed from case counts.
