Donor report: More than 400 000 people need health care in the Central African Republic where the security situation worsens
The security situation continues to be precarious across the Central African Republic. State institutions, rule of law and public services barely function. Since January, sporadic attacks were recorded in Bangui, Bambari, Baboua, Kabo, Batangafo, Markounda, Paoua, Amadagaza, Kouango, Alindao, Mbrès, Bria and Dékoa. These attacks displaced tens of thousands of people, and led to the temporary withdrawal of some NGOs due to increased insecurity and attacks on their vehicles and staff.
Insecurity, bad roads and funding gaps continue to hamper the work of WHO and all other humanitarian partners, upsetting effective scale up of operations outside Bangui. The Central African Republic began its electoral process to create new institutions two months ago. Bangui has seen a serious decline of the security and humanitarian situation. Beginning 26 September, a complex deterioration of the security situation led to 79 deaths, 512 injured and the displacement of 31 000 people in existing camps. Health Cluster partners were targeted and some of their properties were looted, including medical equipment and medicines.
