Monitoring progress on antimicrobial resistance in the WHO African Region

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently one of the most significant global threats as it jeopardizes the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as health, poverty, food security, and the environment. In May 2015, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a Global Action Plan (GAP) on AMR (resolution WHA 68.7) and all WHO Member States committed to developing country-specific One Health AMR national action plans aligned with the GAP. In line with this, the quadripartite – comprising the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) – collaborates to implement a coordinated strategy to address AMR. This includes monitoring and evaluating the progress made in implementing the Global Action Plan on AMR (GAP-AMR).
