Ethiopia Commemorates World Health Day

7 April 2008, Addis Ababa -- World Health Day 2008 under the theme, “Protecting Health from Climate Change “was celebrated with a large public gathering in the Sheba Hall of the Ghion Hotel in the presence of the Honorable Minister of Health of Ethiopia His Excellency Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. 
 

Ethiopia polio vaccination campaigns in areas bordering southern Sudan

16 October 2008 | Addis Ababa - In the context of ongoing response to a polio outbreak in Gambella region, the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with its partners is planning to conduct a polio vaccination campaign targeting about 2.1 million children under age 5 in the zones of Gambella and Benishangul/Gumuz Regions, 6 zones of Oromia Region and 4 zones of Southern Nation Nationalities People Region (SNNPR). The dates of these campaigns are October 17-20, and November 14-17, 2008.

WHO, African Union to tackle high rates of maternal and newborn mortality in Africa

17 March 2004, Ethiopia -- A high-level expert group set up by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the African Union (AU) is to meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 2 April to examine the high rates of maternal and newborn death in Africa and make recommendations to the AU on how to halt and reverse the trend.

This emerged during a meeting recently in Addis Ababa between the WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr. Ebrahim M. Samba and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Alpha Oumar Konare.

WHO-Rotary-UNICEF Joint Statement on World Polio Day 2015

ADDIS ABABA, 23 October 2015 | Marking the occasion of World Polio Day 2015, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Rotary International, jointly reaffirm their commitment to ensure Ethiopia joins all countries in a polio-free world by 2018 – the global target for polio eradication world-wide. 

WPD 2015 Colorfully Commemorated at Addis Ababa Assembly Hall

World Polio Day (WPD) was commemorated on 24 October 2015 at Addis Ababa National Assembly Hall in the presence of the Ethiopian Government, partners: WHO, UNICEF, USAID, and Rotary International and allies CCRDA/ CORE Group. This celebration inspired attendees and viewers to join the Polio eradication effort as Ethiopia is near the finish line: 2018.

A tree planting event took place at Ethiopian Heritage Trust, Entoto, on 4 October 2015 to celebrate Ethiopia – free of polio. The State Mnister of Health, Dr Kebede Worku, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative Dr Pierre M'pele-Kilebou, Rotarians from USA and Canada, Rotaractors and other partners such as Core Group, L10K (The Last 10 Kilometers) and other UN agencies were also part of the event. 

WHO Commits to Improve Health Situation in Gambella, Ethiopia

Increasing reports of communicable diseases and presence of a large number of refugees from south Sudan heightened the need for  strengthened public health emergency preparedness  and response  in Gembella Region.

“WHO commits again as a partner to ensure working together to improve  the health situation of people of Gambella and hundred thousands of refugees from South Sudan” said Dr. Pierre M’Pele-Kilebou, WHO Representative to Ethiopia as he handed over Emergency Health Kits to Gambella  Regional Health Bureau (RHB) .
