WHO expresses concern for escalating public health needs in Ethiopia

The World Health Organization (WHO) raises concerns about Ethiopia's escalating public health needs. According to the Humanitarian Response Plan 2023, 17.4 million people across the country are affected by a prolonged El Niño-induced drought, floods, and conflicts, with the Somali, Afar, Oromia, Central Ethiopia, South Ethiopia, and Southwest areas experiencing the most significant impact. The dire circumstances have triggered a surge in disease outbreaks, including cholera, malaria, measles, and dengue fever, along with alarming levels of acute malnutrition.
 

WHO workshop addresses Health Technology Assessment challenges in African countries

In a landmark event, the World Health Organization (WHO) organized a ‘historical’ workshop on Health Technology Assessment (HTA) for selected member states in the African region.

Held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from December 12th to 14th, 2023, with the theme ‘Health Technology Assessment for Priority Setting to Achieve Universal Health Coverage,’ the workshop aimed at tackling critical issues related to the systematic evaluation of healthcare technology and its role in decision-making processes.

Addis Ababa: The World Health Organization (WHO) Ethiopia’s Country Office hosted the Inter country, capacity building workshop for the National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) of the host Ethiopia, Lesotho, Namibia, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Somalia from the WHO EMRO Region. The NITAG’s capacity building workshop was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 11 to 15 December 2023.

The successful completion of the second cohort AVoHC SURGE training in Ethiopia

The World Health Organization Ethiopia is proud to announce the completion of the second cohort of African Health Volunteers Corps (AVoHC) SURGE training in Ethiopia, with 92 participants, 22 of whom are female. The November 6th to December 8th 2023, 2nd cohort training, enhanced the country's emergency preparedness and response capabilities. This is part of the effort under the Emergency Preparedness and Response Initiative, to ensure that each African country is equipped with knowledge and skills to respond to public health emergencies within 24 to 48 hours.

WHO Intervenes to Control Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Outbreak in Somali Region Through ...

In response to an unprecedented outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Somali Regional state of Ethiopia, the World Health Organization's Ethiopia Country Office (WHO-Ethiopia) has taken swift action to address the public health crisis. 

The first occurrence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis was reported from the regional state in July 2023, and an additional 1023 cases were reported between July 26 and November 30, 2023.

WHO Ethiopia Trains Technical Staff on Resource Mobilization

Bishoftu: The World Health Organization Ethiopia's External Relations team, in partnership with the WHO Africa Regional Office External Relations team, successfully trained 49 WHO Ethiopia staff on fundraising, donor engagement, and reporting. The three-day training, which took place from November 27th to 29th, 2023, equipped staff with the knowledge and necessary skills to boost resource mobilization efforts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Ethiopia Country Office has taken significant steps towards decentralizing its public health activities by providing intensive hands-on training to newly recruited regional hub coordinators and administrative assistants. 

The initiative comes in the wake of the implementation of the approved functional review, the subsequent establishment of six regional hubs, and the staff recruitment for the newly established regional hubs.
