Kenya commemorates World Cancer Day

Nairobi Kenya, 04 February 2012 -- Kenya joined the rest of the world in marking this year’s World Cancer Day under the global theme “together it is possible”. The national event held at Kangemi health centre in Nairobi was presided over by the representative of the Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, Dr Willis Akhwale, head of Disease Prevention and Control (DPC) programme.

WHD 2011 Commemorated: Kenyans urged to fight drug resistance

The day observed at the Riruta Health Centre, Dagoretti in Nairobi was presided over by the Director, Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sharif Shaanaz and attended by WHO Country Representative (WR/Kenya), Dr. Abdoulie Jack among other dignitaries and partners.

Kenya is experiencing rapid change in the epidemiology of malaria as a result of scaled up malaria control and prevention interventions. At present over two thirdsof the country has malaria prevalence of less than 10%.

The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitationin collaboration with partners will distribute approximately 10 million nets in four provinces (Nyanza, Western, Coast and Rift valley) covering a population of 20 million. The activity is expected to deliver nets to achieve universal coverage by providing one net for every 2 persons in these regions.

Nairobi, 02 October, 2012 -- Kenya’s Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, WHO, UNICEF and other partners on Friday launched a US$9million national integrated follow up measles vaccination campaign to vaccinate nearly six million children between six and 59 months against measles from 3 – 7 October, 2012. This follow-up campaign is planned for every 3 years in Kenya in order to catch all the susceptible children who were either missed or who did not get protection from routine measles vaccinations.

04 February 2014, Nairobi – Kenya joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Cancer Day. The national event, commemorated in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, under the global theme “Debunking the Myths”, was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mr. James Macharia.

The Chief Guest noted that the day provided a special opportunity to raise awareness and improve general knowledge and dispel myths and misconceptions about cancer.
