Upgrading IT infrastructure: boosting efficiency with BMS
In a move to enhance efficiency and streamline operations, WHO Botswana has upgraded its IT infrastructure with the implementation of the Business Management System (BMS). This transition replaces the outdated GSM-based system, which required staff to log in and out of multiple platforms to complete tasks. By centralizing essential services, BMS reduces inefficiencies, creating a seamless and integrated workflow.
Explaining the significance of this upgrade, WHO Botswana IT Officer, Dumiliso Benjamin, described BMS as a comprehensive digital platform that consolidates multiple functions into a single, user-friendly system. It provides one-stop access to crucial services such as contracts, HR modules, finance, and procurement systems. "By eliminating the need to switch between different systems, BMS enhances speed, accessibility, and productivity. This ensures that staff can focus on their core responsibilities without unnecessary administrative delays," he said.
To support the implementation of BMS, WHO Botswana has significantly improved its network, hardware, and digital communication tools. "The office upgraded its primary and secondary fiber-optic internet links with an automated failover to ensure stable connectivity, reducing downtime and improving overall system performance," Benjamin explained. He further highlighted that meeting rooms were equipped with high-quality video conferencing technology, enhancing internal communication and virtual collaboration with WHO partners and the Ministry of Health’s E-Learning Hub. This upgrade reduces travel costs, strengthens engagement, and ensures effective remote collaboration.
Beyond connectivity, the new IT infrastructure enhances system security and reliability. The upgraded network and cybersecurity protocols minimize delays, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure system access for all users. Benjamin emphasized that the new system has significantly improved response times, remote access, and system uptime. "Staff can now work more efficiently, experiencing faster system performance and seamless connectivity. This transformation also strengthens WHO Botswana’s ability to support health programs, emergency response, and stakeholder collaboration," he stated.
The transition to BMS and IT upgrades marks a major milestone in WHO Botswana’s digital transformation journey. With enhanced connectivity, advanced tools, and a more efficient IT system, the organization is now better positioned to deliver quality health services and improve overall operational effectiveness.
