Plateau, WHO and partners conduct COVID-19 Intra-Action Review (IAR)

Jos 23 March 2021 - The Plateau State Ministry of Health with the technical support of WHO and partners has conducted an Intra Action Review (IAR) of the current COVID-19 response in the state. The IAR provides key COVID-19 responders, an opportunity to collectively review strategies, share experiences and identify current challenges, as well as identify actions that are working in order to guide adjustments in programmatic decisions for controlling the pandemic. 

Nigeria’s health workers take the country’s first jabs of COVID-19 vaccine

Abuja, 15 March 2021 – After Yunusa Thairu became one of Nigeria’s earliest vaccination recipients, his mother received a text message that her son had taken the COVID-19 vaccine and something bad might happen to him. 

“She got super worried and gave me a call,” the doctor recalls. “I had to drive down to go see and assure her that I am fine, [that] there is nothing wrong with taking the vaccine. Upon seeing how healthy I was, she agreed to take the vaccine when it is available.”

WHO  partners Borno State in fight against Leishmaniasis 

Maiduguri, 18 March, 2021 - When Bako Ibrahim, a 25 years old taxi driver resident in Gima village, Konduga Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State, first noticed the sore on his left hand, he treated it with levity thinking he must have injured himself unknowingly. However, when the wound failed to  heal and later affected both hands, he decided to seek medical intervention. He was diagnosed with Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, a Neglected Tropical Disease.

Lagos, 10 March, 2021 - In Lagos, the Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and World Health Organization Representative (WR) in Nigeria agreed to leverage on Polio resources to strengthen continuity of quality essential health services. The goal is to provide integrated people-centered health services across the state for Universal Health Coverage and health security.

The pledge to make WHO’s support all-inclusive and maximize the existing partnership was made at the Government House in Lagos on 10 March 2021 during a courtesy visit by the WR to the Governor.

COVID-19 vaccines shipped by COVAX arrive in Nigeria

Abuja, 2 March 2021 - Today, Nigeria received nearly 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, shipped via the COVAX Facility, a partnership between CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF and WHO. 

The arrival marked a historic step towards the goal to ensure equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally, in what will be the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. The delivery is part of a first wave of arrivals in Nigeria that will continue in the coming days and weeks.
