WHO donates 65 Beds and WASH supplies to strengthen Tanzania’s ongoing cholera outbreak response
Dar es salaam- The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 65 beds and essential Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) supplies to the Government of Tanzania to bolster the nation’s response to the ongoing cholera outbreak.
Cholera continues to pose a significant public health threat globally, particularly in the African region. Since the current outbreak began in September last year, Tanzania has reported over 4,000 cases, with a case fatality rate of 1.9%. In response, the Tanzanian Government, supported by WHO and other partners, has been implementing rigorous surveillance, risk communication, community engagement, WASH initiatives, and case management interventions to control the outbreak and strengthen the health system.
Dr. Charles Sagoe-Moses, WHO Representative in Tanzania, praised the Government for its persistent efforts despite the challenges. “This donation of beds and WASH supplies is part of WHO’s broader support for rapid response operations,” said Dr. Sagoe-Moses. “We emphasize the importance of a multisectoral approach to cholera prevention and control. Collaborative efforts are essential to ending this outbreak and fortifying health systems for future emergencies.”
Dr. John Jingu, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, expressed his deep gratitude to WHO. “The timing of these donations is critical for our response efforts across more than seven regions,” he said. “We are committed to maintaining these resources at the highest standard to ensure they effectively support our cholera response.”
