Dr. Maganu stated that the theme "Move for Health" was selected by WHO to draw world attention to the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart diseases and stroke, colon cancer and high blood pressure. He said that these diseases are due in part to the rapid transition in lifestyles, leading to reduced physical activity, changing diets and increased tobacco use. He stated that about 2 million people die each year as a result of physical inactivity. Dr. Maganu ephasised the need for promotion of physical activities as a way of preventing non-communicable diseases and called upon the government, private sector, and communities to educate the public on the benefits of physical activity and to improve policies and programmes that will make physical activity an easy choice.

The President of the ZAAA, Mr. Elias Mpondela thanked all the sponsors and participating companies and individuals including WHO for supporting the development of athletics in the country through their participation in the ICR. He called upon the Government and the private sector to support the development of athletics as a way of promoting health and extended his invitation for stronger partnership with the ZAAA in the development of key programmes such as the Talent Identification Programme.
